District 2 Crime Analysis Meeting April 2008

Reported crimes are up from March. Part of this is due to the warm weather; this is an annual trend in Milwaukee. No violent crimes were reported in Bay View. There were reported robberies, burglaries, and motor vehicle thefts in Bay View. The majority of reported crimes in Bay View were thefts. Officer Arzaga explainted that this can be theft of a purse, items from your yard or home, theft of gas, shoplifting, etc. The majority of these were reported in the area radiating outward from Humboldt Park; bordered by Lincoln Avenue, KK, Morgan, and Chase. There was also a cluster of burglaries in the area the first week of April radiating from the Northern KK business district.

The focus of this month’s meeting was reporting crimes. It is very important that residents phone in any and all crimes, thefts, suspicious persons, etc. For examle, if your car is broken into but nothing is stolen, PLEASE REPORT IT. The more information our officers have, the better able they are to track crime trends, which aids them in making arrests. For a crime in progress call 911!!! All other crimes you can report to the non-emergency number - 933-4444.

If crimes are not reported, neighbors may perceive a problem that MPD does not know exists.

Judge Valerie Hill also spoke about the difference between municipal and circuit court. One thing she stressed is that if you are witness to a crime or municipal ordinance violation (loitering, prostitution, drug sale, etc.), write down what you see, be as specific as possible, and give a copy to the police. Witnesses are very important to prosecuting these cases. If you receive a subpoena to appear in court, please go, or the case can be dismissed.

Officer Paul Hinkley is our “beat cop”. Many of you have seen him walking the streets of Bay View. Say hello and thank him for his service to our city!

Dispatch was talked about at length at the meeting. Some citizens reported they had been getting bad service from dispatchers. It should be noted that dispatch is a completely different thing then the MPD. Captain Negron did ask that people take down the time and the
dispatcher’s name or two digit number when they receive bad service. Then call the Captain with the details and he will look into the situation.
